Tasting Note

Greeted by an alluring depth of colour, with notes of chocolate dustings & summer black cherry gateau. The palate is plush, rich & savoury with hints of black & red liquorice. Brooding red stone fruits with bursts of dark berry & earthen roots. Superbly structured & seamless, a wine with power, depth & a promise to develop magnificently.

This is compelling and gratifying; the immensely complex bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, cedar and vanilla characters with a hint of dried herb nuance. The powerful concentrated palate is stacked with layers of dark fruit richness with stylish oak infusion, leading to an impressively long structured finish. It's seamless too with loads of delectable flavours.

This wine is a tribute to the late John Carter, an NZ wine industry pioneer and Soho patriarch. From a top Waiheke vintage, it is a selection of the best barrels. Dense, elegant red wine with plum, dark berry, anise, spice, violet, chocolate-mocha and spicy oak flavours. A smooth-textured wine that is delicious now but it has the potential to develop very well with bottle age.

Deep ruby-red with a purple hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is full and elegantly robust, with succulent aromas of red berries, red stonefruit melded with sweet vanilla, cardamon and cocoa. Full-bodied, the palate is plush with juicy red berries, plums and cherries, followed by sweet spices. The fruit has a strong core, supported by vibrant acidity, provided lightness to the finely structured palate, constructed by fine-grained tannin extraction. This is a red fruit fragranced blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Petit Verdot with a plush and focused palate on a fine-grained tannin palate with strength and structure. Match with ribeye steak and wagyu beef over the next 6+ years.

This expertly crafted wine - made by master winemaker James Rowan - showcases aromas of fresh red and dark plum, boysenberry, dark roses and milk chocolate. Judicious use of oak layers through baking spices and toasty barrel scents. Overall fine and pure. On the palate - youthful, fresh, textured, fruity and dry. Flavours of fresh berries, plums, flowers, oak and chocolate fill the plate. Contrasting acidity and firm youthful tannins suggest cellar time is needed to integrate the attributes. Nice lengthy finish, well made and will reward those who can wait. Best drinking from mid 2022 through 2026+.
